A few have us have been messing around in Star Trek Online now that it's free to play.

It's kind of fun, I'm not sure if it's going to have any longevity at all, because the end game seems like it could be boring.

Either way, it's free. Durk, Cyria, Estara, Fallenfoe, Deffiance, and I are playing so far.

My name in game is: tullen@holthor

Post your names here. We'll likely create a Scalebane fleet (guild) soon.

I remember seeing this game come out and lauging because I knew this was going to happen... I laughed even harder after I saw that it had a life time opt when it came out for 200ish usd. I laugh at the suckers who actually got it.

I don't think we'll be seeing many traditional subscription MMOs anymore.

You still get benefits from the lifetime subs. The ones to truly laugh at/pity are the people who bought Hellgate: London lifetime subscriptions.

Honestly with the amount of MMOs that seem to come and go with the changing of the seasons, I'm surprised WoW is still holding on.
They did lose a lot of subscriptions recently though, and I kinda got the feeling the 1 year commitment plan was a last-hurrah.
I guess we'll see how things pan out. In the meantime, more f2p games woo!

I will probably check Star Trek out after you all get tired though, due to the timing of my LIFE.

I played STO in beta and then bought it. I got bored fairly quickly with it, due to no ship interiors. Has that changed?

Also, the ground quests were boring as shit and I hated doing them.

Yes, you can walk around your ship now, and sit in your captains chair, etc.

Durk tells me they become more integrated to the story missions as you level up, as in you might take a communication in your ready room etc.

Regarding ground combat, while it's no where near as fun as the space combat I've read it's improved significantly from when the game first launched.

They're still holding on to 10mil subs... that's nothing to be sad about even with losing the 2mil... every game has a peak (with WoW every expansion has a peak, usually in the first/second tier and then starts to decline).

The 1 year deal was definitely a way to prevent that from happening as much in Cata as well, as I'm sure Blizzard/Activision have also noticed this pattern. It may have even been a way for them to try and limit the growth of their up and coming competition (mainly SWTOR) to stifle the number of players cancelling WoW to go try out the other MMOs.

MoP actually worries me, as most people I know who have quit playing WoW this expansion/last are lolling all over themselves because of pandas and pokemon... Most seem to have ditched the idea of coming back... We'll definitely have to see if that content is going to draw the old crowd back and new players in to WoW, if not they might start bailing as I've seen a decent amount of stories about the new MMO they're working on.

Scalebane fleet was formed in Star Trek Online. Any officer should be able to provide an invite.
