Open beta starts tomorrow (1/12/2010)!

I checked out the ship customization video for it. It looks pretty cool. Hopefully, it won't be as bad as Champions Online.

Welp, early launch date is today... Here's my little blurb on STO from my beta experiences.

The planet surfaces look nice. The combat is not as fun as I'd hoped it would be. It's using the champions online engine.

There were tons of bugs, but it was beta. I bet only 50% of those bugs go into launch day. Smile

The space combat is fun for a while and then gets repetitive and grindy. I'm hoping the top-end ships are much more fun than the frigate and cruiser I had.

Compared to Eve Online... It's much more action packed for space flight, but not as deep of a combat system as Eve is. I'd say on a scale of 10, Eve is probably around a 5 for combat and STO is around a 3. WoW is around a 7 for combat for me.

Overall, I give the game a score of 40 out of 100 due to its weak combat, weak content, and it being too simplistic. It's easily an entry level MMO. Eve ranks around a 70 for me, due to its depth and hardcore PvP (player housing, best MMO economy, permanent ship death). WoW ranks around 80, due to its massive amount of content and fair PvP.

Don't expect to go into Star Trek Online and walk around inside your ship, flying off to planets and solving tough mysteries, or even giving orders to your crew. None of that exists in the game... Ah well. Now we'll have to wait 10 or 20 years for a real Star Trek MMO.
